Product Description:

Archers of the Yellowstone
The Sheep Eater Indians of Greater Yellowstone were famous throughout the Northern Rockies for their incredibly powerful sinew-backed bows. Made from the horns of the magnificent bighorn rams, the horn bows were prized possessions and prime trade items for these mountain-dwelling people. The art of making these bows has largely been lost but fortunately, Tom Lucas of Lander, Wyoming has succeeded in reconstructing that painstaking process. Archers of the Yellowstone presents a fascinating glimpse of how one man’s passion rescued this ancient art form from oblivion.
Time: 24 minutes

Masters of the Mountain describes the Sheep Eaters and their survival in the environment of the Greater Yellowstone area for thousands of years. It covers their use of sheep traps and ambush technique in hunting the big horns, the geology of the area, various types of shelters, plant use, and the importance of rock art in their lives.

Gifts of the Mountains describes the Sheep Eaters and their use of the resources of the mountains where they lived. Known as healers or spiritual leaders, the Sheep Eaters considered the resources of the mountains as gifts to be used for material and spiritual purposes. These resources included animals, minerals such as steatite, obsidian and chert, and plants for food and medicines.

Life in the Mountain shows how the Sheep Eaters survived in the rugged region of the Greater Yellowstone, how they made their clothing, how they packed their magnificent wolf-like dogs to carry their belongings, how they prepared traditional foods among other things. Ancient fishing methods using nets and wires are tested, with the help of Wyoming Game and Fish Department, high in the Absaroka Mountains.
